InDesign to Figma: brand guides and templates

Bring an InDesign brand guide and its page layouts into Figma, with real swatches, paragraph styles and templates.

Why IDML gives the best result

InDesign Markup (IDML) is the open version of an .indd file. It contains the exact swatches, paragraph and character styles, and the geometry of every page, so Kitform can rebuild your layouts as Figma components instead of guessing from a flat PDF.

How to export IDML

  1. Open the document in InDesign.
  2. Choose File › Save a Copy (or Save As) and pick InDesign CS4 or later (IDML).
  3. Upload the .idml file to Kitform. Linked images aren't inside IDML, so upload the logo separately (SVG or PNG).

What you get in Figma

  • Primitives and Brand variable collections from your swatches (CMYK converted, and flagged so you can confirm screen values).
  • Text styles from your paragraph styles: sizes, leading and tracking.
  • Each InDesign page rebuilt as a Figma template component, with text in your styles and fills bound to your variables.
  • A gap report page listing what the document doesn't define.

Can't open the .indd? Kitform can't read .indd files directly (it's a closed format), but the PDF works too: PDF brand guide to Figma.
